Synopsis: Impressive directorial debut by Paxton has him as Dad, a seemingly normal West Texas widower. One day, however, he tells his boys that their family has been chosen by God to destroy demons who are disguised as normal people. This sounds okay by impressionable nine year old Adam (Sumpter), but older Fenton (O'Leary) seems skeptical. Told mostly in flashback, from the point of view of now-grown, haunted Fenton (McConaughey), the story keeps the gore mostly offscreen, while focusing on the such lofty ideas as the wages of religious fanaticism, the trust between parents and their kids, and toll of insanity. Screenwriting debut for Hanley. Paxton acquits himself well on both sides of the camera, but it's O'Leary who shines. McConaughey turns in his best performance to date.
